P0325: Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Malfunction

Engine knocking can be a very serious problem if it occurs. As you may know, the engine cylinders require the proper air to fuel ratio in order for successful combustion to take place. But when the air to fuel ratio is not correct, the mixture won’t burn evenly. It will ignite uneven pockets of fuel instead of uniform bursts of fuel. This creates a “knocking sound,” which is why it’s called engine knocking. The longer this goes on, the more damage that is caused to the cylinder wall and piston.

The engine consists of special sensors called knock sensors. They are designed to detect any “knocking” that comes from the engine. You’ll probably know something is wrong immediately because the engine won’t generate as much power as usual. You’ll also see the Check Engine warning light come on too. That should be enough to motivate you to run a diagnostic check on the powertrain control module and see what the problem is. If trouble code P0325 is shown on the display screen, then it indicates that Knock Sensor 1 is experiencing a circuit malfunction of some kind.

The cause of trouble code P0325 can be attributed to a bad engine coolant system, bad knock sensor wiring, lean running engine, or a bad knock sensor in bank 1. The problem itself does not require an immediate resolution because you won’t experience any serious drivability issues. However, you should take your vehicle in to the auto shop soon in order to prevent the possibility of engine damage.

Do not automatically assume that knock sensor 1 needs to be replaced. A professional mechanic can test the other components of your vehicle to determine if something else is the cause of the problem. But if you have trouble code P0325 present, at least it’ll help the mechanic understand more about where the possible causes of the problem are located.
